Hyunha Esther Lim
I explore contemporary reality shaped by algorithmic images and personalized advertising.
By translating fast, disposable digital visuals into slow, material paintings, my work examines how agency, attention, and value are formed in the algorithmic age.
My Practice
My practice began with personalized advertisements collected from Instagram.
I deconstruct and reassemble these images into digital collages, then translate them into hand-crafted material installations.
Through this shift from digital to physical, fast-scrolling images gain weight, duration, and material presence, allowing agency to be reclaimed.
Critical Context
In digital environments, advertising images do not simply sell products; they shape desire, perception, and choice. While algorithms promise personalization, they also quietly erode individual agency.
My work reflects on this condition by slowing down images designed to disappear. Crafting and Painting becomes a method of resistance: a way to look longer, to reclaim attention, and to restore an active gaze.
Rather than rejecting digital culture, my practice moves between digital and physical to reveal its structures and contradictions.
