Breaking the Mold, 2021

Digital print on chiffon and charmeuse fabric
 88 x 88cm, 128 x 128cm, 145 x 120cm Dimensions variable

Breaking the Mold examines how certain images on Instagram are repeatedly produced and circulated without variation. These recurring visuals, often described as “Instagrammable,” are shaped by hashtags, trends, and platform conventions that encourage imitation.

The works are composed of digital collages created from images collected through hashtag searches of popular locations and objects on Instagram. As users encounter these images through search and recommendation systems, they reproduce similar compositions, colors, and gestures, reinforcing a visual pattern or mold.

Installed as fabric prints in an exhibition space, Breaking the Mold reflects this cycle back to its audience. Viewers often photograph the work and upload it again to Instagram, turning the installation into yet another Instagrammable image. Through this recursive process, the series reveals how platforms shape visual desire and how images continuously reproduce themselves within algorithmic systems.
